If you’ve just entered ETF trading you are going to hear a lot about different types of trading, methods, and strategies. One of the popular discussions will include ETF Trend Trading. Some people talk about trend trading as though it is a separate kind of trading that isn’t related to ETF trading as a whole. Some sites will talk about ETF trend trading as a way to increase one’s gains in trading.

If you have started trading and are doing the analytical work to spot trends and patterns, and are acting on those trends, you are already trend trading. It is not a secret strategy or way to conduct trades. A successful trader does their homework and acts on the trends that they see coming in the sector, or industry they are trading within. So, let’s take a look at trends and how you can use them more effectively.

When people do a historical analysis of a sector before they begin trading, they may look at a specific block of time. Some people do an analysis on a three or five year period and note the different trending indicators in that period of time. But, what is a sector, has a significant gain or loss every seven years? If a person has not included those years in their analysis, they can miss an opportunity to make a significant gain in their portfolio.

It is very easy for a person to get caught up in the analytics of sectors when they are trying to make the most favorable trading decisions. In order to keep from being bogged down in the details and lose valuable time trading, it is a good idea to decide what type of ETF trend trading you are going to do as far as technical analysis and stick with it.

Short term trends are usually historical data for a sector covering one to three years. A technical analysis using historical data of one to three years is going to show only trends that occur in that time frame. When a person is going to use short term trends as their primary indicator, they will need to move very quickly in creating a long position when the trend rising or short when the trend is dropping and get out quickly when there is a blip on the screen. Employing only short term trending may prevent a person from seeing trends that occur within a longer time period.

Intermediate term trends are the trends that occur within a long term trend. When analyzing trends, if the reason for an intermediate trend can be effectively identified, and a pattern found, there is a significant opportunity to make gains on those blips that occur in the sector.

When traders act on trends without having the background to know when to get in and when to get out, they can suffer losses. However, a person can use an intermediate trend in a sector to their advantage if they know that the same patter occurs every four years and what the buy and sell limits for that trend should be.

Many people who have a long term ETF are looking for steady growth in their ETF. While this is a very low risk ETF, if a person knows when it is going to reverse, they have an opportunity to save money by moving before the trend reverses.

Learning about ETF trend trading and whether or not it will be difficult will depend on how you learned to start trading. There are many types, strategies, methods, and ideas for effective trading of ETFs. When a person has done the research necessary to have success in ETF trading, they have probably already learned about ETF trend trading, but don’t realize it.

Most technical analysts use an analytical program that provides detailed, long term data on the trends of a sector. This program gives information on the short term, intermediate, and long term trends and details about the level and length of time that each trend occurs.

When a person uses one of these tools, it is important to remember that without other indicators, the information shown on the trend may not be providing all of the information that one will need to make successful trades. A trend may show a significant drop, for instance, if there is a major executive level change in a major business within a sector during a short term trend. When this occurs the trend may show a downward flow for up to two years.

However, this trend may not be repeated again in the sector for several years. A person making a future trade based on the indicators of the analytical data alone would not know this and the trade made would not be as successful as might be expected.

The idea of ETF trend trading is to jump in when a stock is on the rise or fall with the idea that is going to continue in that direction for a period of time. When the stock is rising a person takes a long position. When it is dropping a person takes a short position. In either case, when the trend begins to reverse, a trade is made. The most closely that the beginning and end of a trend can be predicted, the better the gains will be on the trade.

A person who is involved with their trades and has analyzed and studied the indicators in their sector will have a better ability to be effective in ETF trend trading. There are some sectors that trend trading is very effective with and other sections that do not have the indicators that make trend trading an effective method on a consistent basis.

Setting buy and sell limits will act as a safety net, should a trend begin to reverse too soon. When a person gets involved with a sector through analytical and historical analysis, they sometimes get too involved. It is important to have a limit and stick with it when trend trading.

Learning about systems, strategies, methods, and types of trading, including ETF trend trading will give a person a broad pool of information to pull from when there is an opportunity presented in ETF trading. By knowing about the different aspects of ETF trading a person is more prepared to system systems, trading strategies, or sectors when needed.

Etf trend trading is getting a lot of attention, many people are retorting that this form of trading is actually the way that investors will be trading for years to come. Before you jump the gun and decide to obtain your own etf it is imperative that you understand exactly what these funds are and how they can benefit you as an investor.

ETF is an abbreviation for the funds original name which is exchange traded fund. These funds are openly traded on all the different stock exchanges (so they are not exactly new to the investment game). A lot of people choose to compare these funds to stocks.

The etfs hold assets just like stock and bonds do and they are traded for the price of their total net value, same exact way that stocks are traded on the stock market every single day. However, the funds are normally indexed, which differs in comparison to stock trading.

A lot of people that are looking for an inexpensive means to trade on the stock market are extremely interested in these funds. More and more people are rushing to obtain an etf because of the low amount that you need to put down in order to start your investment.

Etfs offer traders an undivided interest in a pool of different securities. Many people have actually compared these funds to mutual funds because of how they are traded on the market. As many people have a knowledge base that surrounds mutual funds you can probably understand why these funds are becoming so popular.

You can buy or sell your etf anytime throughout the trading day. There are so many different reasons why a plethora of investors have shifted their investment sites on etfs instead of stocks and mutual funds. In order to understand why you should look into investing in etfs you need to understand what they can do to benefit you in the long run.

The funds can be purchased for a much lower rate than mutual funds and stocks. Many mutual funds will not even allow you to open an account of your own unless you have a minimum of $1500 or more to do so. With the decline in the economy, no one has the necessary funds to simply invest anymore.

You can obtain an etf for as low as one hundred dollars in many respects. However, as you may already know the more money that you put down to start your investment trading the better return you can expect to generate. But, to get your foot into the door you do not have to have a mass amount of money.

Showing etf trading on any investment portfolio says a lot for a veteran and even a new trader. The etf market is extremely diversified so there are always different funds that you can investment it to increase your capital gain.

Another great attribute about the funds is the fact that you will always be aware of how much money your fund is generating. In fact, you can check on the amount of money that you have in your fund at your own leisure throughout your day.

Today, exchange traded funds or ETFs make for a great investment vehicle that hold out the possibility of a good income for those traitors willing to take the time to learn how to make exchange traded funds really work. Understanding good ETF trading strategies, though, is probably one of the first things to learn after gaining an understanding of the basics of what ETFs are.

In a way, an ETF is similar to a mutual fund in the way it is constituted and run by a fund manager. Usually, though, almost every exchange traded fund limits its membership to what are known as institutional investors. This means large investors capable of buying and selling big blocks of stocks known as creation units. There are ways, though, for small investors to get in on the action through a trading system.

Think of an ETF, also, as a corporate stock in how it is sold or traded and bought. This will give you a good idea of how ETFs can be tracked in a market. Additionally, it is even easier to do so because all ETFs track one of the major market indexes. For purposes of discussion, assume that a particular ETF will track the Standard & Poor’s 500. This makes it very easy to follow trends.

For a fact, there are endless trading strategies out there that can be used to track market movements and then timing buying and selling by those movements. Most, however, fall into two categories known as technical trading strategies and fundamental trading strategies. Technical strategists believe they can pick out shapes and patterns in market movements.

For those with the ability to pick out shapes and patterns in market movements — by analyzing a stock chart — the possibility of good income is very real. These movements can signal upward and downward movement in markets that can be timed through technical analysis, with the correct buy and sell orders put in at the right times.

One of the most common of technical strategies that exists today is to utilize what professional and amateur traders call the “moving average cross.” With it, traders look at short-term movements in the market — or a stock or fund — and then overlay that short-term movement on a long-term trendline. Usually, most short-term movements are from– to 25 days in duration to create a moving average line.

After that moving average line has been created, most traders will superimpose that over an analysis of the short-term movements in an attempt to discern the actual movement the price of the stock or stock held in the ETF will take once it crosses the moving average line. Long-term trendline analysis, which is the second element, takes a 50 day moving average, which can damp the short-term trend.

Employing this strategy, traders can look at trends in the long-term and develop the moving support line. Those who are skilled at this strategy can pick out the right time to buy a stock at the bottom of its upward climb or at the point when the stock has touched or lightly penetrated the 50 day average. One can also use it to sell the stock short in an effective manner. Money is usually made on the margins.

Learning ETF trading is going to take some time. There is no quick way to get around the learning curve that requires one to develop the skills and knowledge that will help them to become successful traders. By having a basic understanding of how ETF works and what to expect an individual will be able to focus on those areas within ETF that are most relevant to their needs.

There are many Internet sites that offer information, materials, and courses on ETF trading. Some of these courses can be beneficial. However, it is important to do the research necessary to assure that the company or individual offering the book, course, or training is legitimate and has a history with ETF trading that will make the strategy or method they are teaching consistently effective.

The ETF industry is gaining popularity at a very fast rate. As more people and companies have learned of the many benefits and advantages of ETF training the industry has grown to almost twice the size it was in 2008. The flexibility offered to traders and the lower fees are just two of the benefits to traders in this market.

Trading mutual funds can only occur at the end of a trading day. This is not the case with ETFs which can be traded throughout the trading day. Traders find that this allows them the advantage to act proactively when a sector or industry makes a sudden change during the day. Changes occur on the index in fifteen second intervals. By having the flexibility to act immediately an individual can see significant gains on investments and avoid time sensitive losses.

ETFs track an index like the S&P 500 or MSCI EAFE. Each basket, or sector, has its own unique symbol just like other stocks. The value of ETFs is based on the weighted average or price of all of the stocks and bonds in a sector. So, if there are 16 companies in a sector that all of stocks and bonds, the net asset value of the ETF will be the total of all the stocks and bonds for those companies averaged out. Therefore, a return may not be as large as one expects if they have not averaged the stocks and bonds for all companies in a sector.

Stocks and ETFs are very much alike. Traders are able to use limit order, stop-loss orders, bracketed buy orders, etc. In addition, a trader can sell short at any time. This adds to the flexibility of ETF trading and is unlike the regulation disallowing short sales of stocks that are below what their last price was. An ETF trader can short sell immediately when required to take advantage of an opportunity.

Many individuals are learning about the existence of ETFs because they are seeing them as an offering in their mixed portfolios. More large companies are including ETFs in their offerings because long term ETFs offer low risk to the overall portfolio of an investor and steady growth. Many large businesses are buying creation units so that they can diversity the options within their programs even further.

When deciding to enter ETF trading a person will want to do the research necessary to be successful. It is important to learn about how ETF is structured, how trading works, and what strategies can be employed to have a successful trading career. Discussing ETF with a person who knows the intricacies of the fund will provide one with the information and direction they need to become a successful ETF trader.

You know the difference between winning and losing trades -- we've all experienced both and know the joy and the pain well.

You know the difference between winning and losing trades — we’ve all experienced both and know the joy and the pain well.

However in considering the loss of a trade, the strategy is usually sound, it is the trader that came up short.

Uh huh… that is most likely you! However, help is on the way…. I am going to discuss ways to stop financial losses, and begin being a winner at the trades. Prior to placing orders, you have to decide where your stop loss order will be placed.

No discussion of position entry is complete without a thorough explanation of stops. But I’m left to wonder why so few investors use stop-losses. If you’re guilty of not using stops, you need this information. It might just mean the difference between retiring on time with a healthy nest egg or retiring later and still just “scraping by.”

When you have a plan for placing stops, your wins will out weigh you losses, and when the losses come you will come out on top because you will still be around to trade. The traders psychology of loss taking bears looking at here.

All professional traders understand they must know where they are getting out before they get in. They have to know ahead of time what a wrong trade looks like so they can exit it quickly. This is a rudimentary fundamental that EVERY professional trader knows the answer to.

Can you answer the following questions?

1.) When should you stay on board and when should you bail out?

2.) When a stock is losing, do you have a guide that lets you know when to sell?

3.) Is there a set point for you to break-even by moving your stop?

If you can’t answer these questions, you’re not alone. And what it means is that you need to establish some rules for yourself, especially when you go to short stocks. But, all the trading rules in the world are meaningless if you don’t use them. That’s why you and I need to “talk turkey” about what’s really going on with you when you refuse to manage your risk in a proactive and professional way.

There are 2 base reasons why Investors won’t take a loss:

1. Admit they are wrong? No Way!

A realized loss is a great big unavoidable acknowledgment of wrongness. For many traders, this is just too painful to admit. It’s interpreted as an allegory for a total life failure or feeds a persistent, negative self-image.

A trader like this experiences real pain from the loss, and would rather deny it than fess up to the fact that it is giving them the pain. Quite often it requires a total loss before he can begin to change. To quit trading is the only other alternative.

2. The losing position is too big relative to their overall portfolio value so they can’t afford take the loss.

The loss is a real loss, it is not solely on paper, the stock/bond option has the value of the quote, even if you don’t see it.

These 2 situations are types of self-denial this problem is common with tons and tons of investors. Observe Merrill-Lynch, AIG, WAMU, Lehman.. and on and on…. you should be comforted to know that this self denial is not limited to just one income level or social status.

Are you squirming in your seat because as you read this article you feel powerless and/or angry? That is a good thing. It tells you that you are ready to make the change.

A winning trader will have a different view of losses than a losing trader. He doesn’t take it personally. He takes it as a sign that he needs to revamp his approach or execution no that it is a sign that he as a person is lacking.

A winning trader distinguishes himself from what he does. They are aware that their worth as a human being is not linked to their skill at trading, but that they will need to increase their skill and experience to improve their approach and execution. They use the pain they feel to motivate themselves and increase their drive to be a better trader.

Both are learned responses and within your control. The opportunity for growth from the pain of losses is the same. It’s what we do with the emotional pain of a loss that matters, not the loss itself.

Stick with my proven ETF Trend Trading system and make winning a habit. Study; ask questions and monitor your position size relative to your portfolio and you will end up on the winning side more often than not.

“Proper Stops and risks” are main points in my program and reminding you constantly of that is an important part of my mentorship program. Once you have gone through my program completely and thoroughly understand it, you will still want me to tell you “Don’t move your stop” and “Be sure to take profits when my system tells you to, not earlier or later” In fact the mentorship program is probably valued higher than the course itself.
